Good thinking is expensive

The reason I say this is because bad thinking has cost me a lot in life.

Today I received a message from a good friend mentioning how he is fond of my blogs and articles but insisted that I stop. He was concerned, about how good articles like mine gets ignored by people on social media platforms like Facebook because peopleโ€™s attention span is getting shorter. Long blogs written by me are meant to be unappreciated.

Is this really the case?

Even though current studies in the field of human psychology confirm that the average human’s attention span, especially on screens or social media has reduced from 75 seconds to 47 seconds. It can be true to a certain extent. However, it doesn’t talk much about what the viewer or readers value.

I don’t know it too (Sorry, I am not a scientist or a professor). I just know this: people’s attention span has not reduced it has developed. People of today know which content brings value to them. The moment they see itโ€™s not in alignment with their values, they will immediately make a choice. And this is completely fine; it doesn’t mean that their attention span has reduced. It only means they are seeking something that brings value to their life, probably faster.

So, what are values? They are basically the principles that are either important or missing in your life. This means if someone values success, fun, and joy in life, they will spend time observing the success, fun, and joy of others, and share their stories of joy with others or search for a source that can bring that to their life. If someone values inspiration or productivity in life, they will continue to write and share motivational quotes, videos, or articles that can bring value to them and others or educate themselves on the subject. If someone values cinema, they will spend time on musical videos, movies, or celebrity talks and further share them or aspire to become one.

So, when certain people chose to ignore my writing (long, short, self-proclaiming, self-publishing, etc..) for any reason, I think it is absolutely valid because it is not in alignment with their current values and interest. Respecting this feedback is an important practice for a writer. At the same time, a large number of likes, comments, or shares on social media for an article and blog or a book becoming a best seller in the market doesn’t define the success of a writer.

A good writer (be it fictional or non-fictional) will always write about the things that are inspiring for him so that he can inspire others.

The reason I study and write about mindfulness and minimalism is that I am a poor thinker and have the habits of a mindless person by default. I overthink and overeat. I complain when things go out of my control. I do impulsive buying. I watch web series on the marathon. I scroll on my phone for hours turning me into a zombie. All these actions are not in alignment with my values. Well, writing is.

If it wasn’t for my own growth and others, I would have got nothing done. I wouldn’t even have written this article. Good writing forces me towards good thinking. Becoming a good human being with a good life is one of my values.

Like good writing, good thinking takes time.
